Bernie’s Love is Waiting.
AGE: 5 yr
SEX: Neutered male
Breed: Lab Mix
Bernie was found abandoned on the road by some local good Samaritans. Whoever left him there hadn’t done it in a rush or by accident. They had simply driven away and not come back. Bernie sat and waited, because waiting was all he knew how to do. He couldn’t see the cars rushing past. He could only possibly see shadows.
Bernie’s eyes — once probably bright and curious — are now clouded over with thick cataracts. Both eyes. He has learned to trust smell and sound over sight, to follow the warm smell of a human hand rather than the image of a face. He has adapted the way survivors do: not because it is easy, but because there is no other choice.

And yet — Bernie wags his tail. That is the thing that undoes everyone who meets him. Not a polite, cautious wag. A full, sweeping, whole-body wag that says: I don’t know who you are, but I am so glad you are here.

He has been let down by people before — and still he leans into every outstretched hand. His trust is not naive. It is chosen. And that makes it one of the most remarkable things about him.

Bernie's Superpowers: Sniffer Extraordinaire: His nose and ears are basically a superpower!
